Our Story

Founded in 1994 in Richmond, Virginia, University Instructors (UI) started as a one-to-one private mentoring service, connecting students to tutors from local universities. In 1998, Richmond Public Schools contracted UI to help its high school students pass state tests, which led to the development of daytime tutoring support programs for dozens of schools and school districts in Virginia. UI quickly expanded to other states, eventually expanding its services to include afterschool and summer programs, educator pipeline development, and human capital and project management.

In 2013, UI was acquired by Public Consulting Group (PCG), allowing UI to leverage the expertise of a global management consulting firm to improve offerings and reach new communities throughout the U.S. UI now employs thousands of educational staff and delivers more than 1 million hours of direct instruction each academic year.

We help students develop the skills, attitudes, and vision to accomplish their dreams and aspirations, and we help school districts build dynamic educator pipelines to ensure all students have great teachers.

Who We Are

Our experienced instructors are passionate about helping students achieve academic success. We have a 94.5 percent fill rate for all positions requested nationally, and our instructor turnover is less than 8 percent.

We have built a diverse and talented team to best support your students. More than 70 percent of our instructors come from diverse backgrounds. All instructors hold an academic degree in the required discipline, 35 percent of whom hold master’s or doctorate degrees.

What We Do

We serve a range of program sizes, providing anywhere from five to over 250 instructors depending on the school or district’s needs. Collectively, our instructors deliver over 1 million hours of direct student support services every academic year for schools and districts across the country.

UI provides K-12 programming in 32 states.

We partner and have contracts with:

• 7 of the top 10 largest school districts

• 15 of the top 30 largest school districts

• 26 districts a part of the Council of Great City Public Schools

We boast a 95 percent client retention rate year-over-year, and less than 10 percent negative turnover rate for all UI programs nationwide.
